4 Ways to Gain Loyal Blog Followers

File_000

Do you ever come across an Instagram account that has thousands of followers but only gets a few hundred likes per post and barely any comments? I know I do. That’s what happens in the case of blogging too. Remember, there’s a difference between raising your follower NUMBER and gaining real, LOYAL followers who love your content and enjoy reading your posts. Most of the times, those are two completely different things. Some people are so focused on gaining followers that they often forget that they should be aiming to gain loyal ones. The ones who really care about their blog and that’s why follow it.

Just persuading someone to click that “follow” button does NOT make them a follower. I’ve often seen people say, “I follow back!” or “Follow me and I’ll follow you.” This is what leads to a blogger gaining followers, but not ones who would read their posts and comment on them. This won’t help you gain more page views or unique visitors every month. This is just people trying to bribe others into following them so that they can raise their followers number and display it to the world. But bribing someone like this does NOT mean that they would return to your blog regularly and interact with you.

You might be wondering, “So what can I do to make my blog even better for people to follow it?” Don’t worry, today I’m here to talk about some ways you can gain loyal followers, the ones who will read your posts and come back for more!

  1. Post quality content: This is one of the most important things for a blogger. Great content. If people visit your blog and don’t like what they see, they’ll most likely not visit again. Your blog is full of book reviews and memes? Post some discussions/tips once in a while! Try to make your posts interesting, engaging and helpful for others. Then people would definitely be attracted your blog, follow it, and THERE! You just gained a loyal follower. 🙂 After all, who doesn’t like to visit a blog that has great discussions, blogging tips, and more?  Remember: It’s better to put more time into fewer posts than less time into more posts.
  2. Interact with other bloggers: Interacting, whether on social media or other blogs, is really important too. You can’t just keep yourself in a shell in the blogosphere. Open up and interact with fellow book lovers! Trust me, they’re some of the nicest people out there, and would definitely love to fangirl over books with you! This would not only gain you a follower/reader that enjoys your content, but you’ll also make a new online friend!
  3. Comment back:  Book blogging is all about sharing your thoughts on books and interacting with others! We all enjoy getting comments on our posts, of course, but what’s important is that when someone comments on your blog, you make sure to check out theirs and comment back too! After all, they took their time to come visit your blog, so you should try to do the same in return. 🙂
  4. Guest posting on other blogs:  While creating awesome content on your own blog certainly attracts people, posting great content on someone else’s blog will expose you to a whole new audience. Those readers would go and visit your blog if they liked your post and follow you there!

Those are a few ways you can gain a loyal following. Personally, I’d rather have a following of people who listen to what I have to say, than just increase that follower number. I know it often gets difficult to focus on doing that since publishers look for a large following, but we should be able to manage between the two.

I hope these tips are helpful to you! Do you agree with any of them? What do YOU do to grow your blog?

    Love this post!
I personally just started blogging this month and am trying to find what works best for me 🙂 My favorite part so far has been being able to talk with people about the books I love, I don’t think that’ll ever get old.
    Thanks for your tips!!

(I’m so sorry I just saw this) Thank you! Yes of course, that’s one of the main reasons I started blogging – to be able to talk about books with people who not only understand but even share my love for reading. 🙂 There’s always someone out there with whom you can discuss your feels, even if it’s an ARC.

Something that frustrates me is when someone comments on my post some variation of only “Hey, check out my blog at [link]!” or even “I follow for follow”. I’ve gotten that a few times, and I honestly don’t really see the point if it’s not a genuine interaction. I visit every person’s blog who comments on my posts anyways, but when someone just comments for me to check out or follow their blog, I’m likely not to.

These are really great tips on how to gain loyal followers! I absolutely agree with all of them – I try my best to follow these for my own blog. I haven’t done any guest posts yet, but I’m open to trying them out in a few weeks after I graduate! Fantastic post! 🙂

Yes, I absolutely agree. That’s so annoying. They should try to improve their blogs to attract people, rather than asking them to visit it that way.
Thank you! I’m so glad you liked them! 🙂 Ooh yes I’m planning to do that this summer too—there’s no way I’d be able to find time right now because of school.

I absolutely love this post, and agree wholeheartedly with all of the advice that you’ve posted.

Like you say, a loyal but small following is better than a huge following who don’t actually read your posts. I always try to com ment on things that I think are well written, interesting or just generally great because that’s what blogging is really about! X

Thanks for posting this. This discussion was on a writing site called Mylot today too. On there we make money by commenting on each others’ posts. And someone was saying on there people would say to comment on their post and they will comment back. But most people don’t.

Oh, I had no idea there was such a thing going on. That’s not a good way to make money tbh. We shouldn’t comment on someone’s post just because we *have* to; it should be because we *want* to. And it’s totally up to a blogger whether they want to comment back or not – the person who comments on their post shouldn’t/can’t force them to.

I agree with a lot of this. I do have people that I know look at all my posts, and really take the time to consider them, and often like and/or comment and recommend to others. I try to do the same – I read a post, if I like it, say so, if I feel the need to comment…. And at first I wasn’t blog-software-savvy enough to figure out how to comment/reply, but once I did, there’s been no stopping me. 😉

I’d prefer to know what more people are thinking… I get the idea there are *lots* of bloggers who read a lot of other blogs, but never comment, like, etc., so it may be hard for others of us to get feedback. I really appreciate it when people do converse and share.

I LOVE THIS POST SO MUCH. ❤ I agree with all these. I've never tried guest-posting though, but I want to. I just need to see who would want me to guest post. 🙂 Ooh and I'm also thinking about having people guest post on my blog too.
AND OHMYGOODNESS, I need to get better at interacting with new people. And posting more unique content.

    Great post!

THANK YOU SO MUCH! <33 Me neither tbh, I don't know what made me write that here but it's definitely not personal experience. 😅 Sounds great! You should totally do that 🙂
I need to work on that too. I usually don't even find time to write new blog posts; commenting back is out of question atm. *sigh*

Great post! This is something that I am trying to work on. I’ve been blogging since February, so I’m still rather new to blogging and bookstagram, and I admit, gaining a lot of new followers at a time is really exciting. It’s super tempting for me to do shout outs for shout outs and follow for follows, because I feel like my blog will never be found in the sea of all the other amazing book blogs. It can be really hard to not think about the follower count.

Although, I’ve also noticed I’ve lost quite a few followers as well, because like you said, they’re not loyal. They’re just looking for follows. I’ve even noticed at times, this is especially so on Instagram, that someone will follow me, ask me to follow them, and regardless of whether or not I do, they’ll unfollow me after a week or two. Something like that is more disheartening than if they hadn’t followed in the first place!

So, I’ve definitely been trying to be more intentional with the people that I follow, and especially the people that follow me. My biggest struggle is thinking up content that people will enjoy! How do you think of original topics and figure out what people want to read?

Thank you! I totally agree with that — I’ve been through the same thing as well. But all we need to have is confidence in our blog and our ability to be successful in the blogosphere one day! 🙂
Yes, so true. That applies to Twitter as well — it has happened SO many times with me. It’s just frustrating that people do that.
Oh you should just try to make your posts as relatable to other bloggers as possible. If they are personally facing that thing in life too (like this post ^), they’d definitely check it out! And a mixture of different kinds of posts is the best. 🙂 Posting a few reviews, discussions, and other types of posts (like memes) in a week is more than enough!

I agree with everything you said. I get frustrated when I see comments only saying “Hey, I followed you, I hope you’ll follow me back”. Yes, your counter grows, but that doesn’t mean you will actually interact with those bloggers. The point of blogging is to share and discuss, I don’t feel the need to gain as many followers as possible for the sake of enticing publishers to send me books, or tell everyone how I reached a million followers. I’d rather having a bunch of followers who actually care about what I publish and talk about, rather than an anonymous number that never shows on my blog.
    Great post!! 🙂

Really interesting post! I agree with writing quality content, I used to write a lot of reviews, but then I realised that I don’t really like reading them on other people’s blogs, so why was I making myself do it?!

    • Shikha @ Fiction and Tea says:

Thank you! Ah yes, that’s so true! The same goes for me too, to be honest. I barely find myself reading reviews unless it’s a book I’m dying to read or currently reading, whereas on the other hand, I’ll definitely check out a discussion post.

Love this post Shikha! I really want to be more active on our blog–I promise to work on it! We recently got our laptop fixed and I’m in a very blog-y mood so hopefully within the next week or so I’ll begin stocking up on posts! I’ll definitely be taking all of your advice–you are a much better blogger than I am! XD

This was a great post!!! I feel like interacting with other people and blogs is by far the best way to gain consistent followers. Connection is the key and forming bonds with others is amazing in and of itself.

I love this post! I just started my blog about a month ago because I felt like it would go well with my goodreads. This helped me understand how to get followers and subscribers! I came across your blog and I love your reviews! Thank you for this post and all your other ones 🙂
