Books to Movies… (A Critical and Dangerous Transformation)

So, in the book worm realm, there is a very dangerous, fear-filled realm, one that all readers both anticipate and dread…

The transformation from book to film.

We all know the feeling. One of our favorite books/series’ are being turned into either a movie or TV show, and we are torn between total excitement and fear that they will completely botch the story.

So, in this post I will be discussing some book-to-movie adaptations, and how well I believe the transformation occurred.

(Remember everyone, these are opinions, not fact. If you disagree with anything I say, feel free to say so in the comments! But, also, please don’t bash on me or others for their opinions.)

Also, this may also be a tag, I’m not sure! But I asked my mom for ideas for different blog posts, and she immediately suggested this one! Sounded ridiculously fun, so I had to give it a shot! 🙂

So, let’s get started with my most favoritest adaptations ever!!!! (GRAMMAR POLICE PLEASE DON’T ARREST ME I’M SORRY)

Harry Potter

year2

Me too Harry, me too.

So, many people dislike the Harry Potter movies for leaving things out. Many people love them for, well, everything.

Me, personally?

adore them.

I know they do leave quite a bit out, but I can’t blame them, it’s so hard to incorporate everything, so I 100% forgive them for it. Plus, they’re brilliantly done and have a perfect cast. So. Yeah.

I’ve watched them so many times that, for the first three movies at least, I can quote along with them, line for line. They’re my not-so-guilty pleasure, my equivalent of comfort food. As a matter of fact, my dad said the other day, “Don’t make fun of me for this, but whenever we watch Harry Potter, I feel…. Good. Comforted. Like everything’s right in the world.” I melted. Because, jeez, isn’t that just the truth? I grew up on Harry Potter. I remember seeing the last several in the theater and the ridiculous excitement…. *sigh*

Okay I seriously need to move on, because this is just making me way too emotional right now! XD

Harry Potter Adaptation: 5/5 BLOODY BRILLIANT STARS

Happy Harry

The Hobbit & Lord of the Rings

tumblr_lwcxlssfbw1ql9b8ho5_250

(THIS GIF IS MAKING ME EMOTIONAL. WHY DID I THINK THIS POST WAS A GOOD IDEA?! I BLAME YOU MOM.)

I don’t really think anyone dislikes Lord of the Rings?? At least I’ve not heard anyone not like it?? (Unless they just don’t like sci-fi/fantasy.. *cough* my grandma *cough* I’ve heard some people not like The Hobbit since they did add some things in, but not many.

These movies are right up there with Harry Potter. Asking me to choose between the three… It’s impossible. I love them all too much!!

So, ridiculously attached to the characters, rewatched them tons. These are some of the absolutely most brilliantly done movies I have ever seen! (Peter Jackson, can you please work on some more adaptations?!?) And the cast is A+. SO MUCH LOVE FOR THEM! (Have I mentioned I totally *stared at (*stalked) Sean Astin at ComicCon? ;))

Lord of the Rings Adaptations: 5/5 precious rings

The Hobbit Adaptations: 5/5 fire-breathing dragons

(Alright, gonna get a bit more controversial now.)

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

tumblr_miackafkhm1qmom57o1_500

So, this movie gets a lot of hate for being so so so different from the books. While having so many things be changed, I did actually enjoy the movie! It isn’t one of my favorites by far, but I find myself able to enjoy it.

Some of the scenes and lines were so cheesy, a couple of the actors were…. yikes. And, a lot of it felt rushed. But other than that, pretty enjoyable. I feel like if it wasn’t an adaptation/I hadn’t read the book, I would have really loved it.

The Mortal Instruments Adaptation: 3.5/5 mortal cups

Percy Jackson

tumblr_nnmpc2tizf1tzyvdro1_500

Once again, these two movies get a lot of heat for not staying loyal to the books. And here’s my thoughts:

I really enjoyed the first movie. Like, a lot. It’s a very rewatchable movie! The second one I thought was pretty good as well. But these are if they were strictly movies, not adaptations.

In terms of adaptations, I still give the first movie a very high rating! Sorry. I’m gonna get judged for this. Oh well! Just my opinion. The second one….. Eek. NEWS FLASH: the prophecy wasn’t supposed to come in for another couple books. *sigh* whatever.

Percy Jackson Adaptations: 3.75/5 pens that are actually swords

The Hunger Games

pdywos

Once again, a great adaptation here! (At least, I think so!)

The cast is phenomenal, the writing incredible, the effects spectacular, and the story beyond compelling.

This is the series that took the world by storm. And I can see why!

If you have seen Mockingjay part 2, you’ll know what I mean when I say that I have never, in my life, cried so much in a film. In public. (Pro tip: do NOT wear mascara while watching it.)

I feel like some parts in the films could have been done a little better, but jeez, these are some fantastic adaptations right there.

The Hunger Games Adaptations: 4.75/5 cornucopias

So, there are plenty more adaptations I could talk about in here. But, this post is already a lot longer than I meant it to be, my laptop is starting to get really hot, and it’s almost dinner time, so I won’t bore you all with more of my weirdness. XD

letschat

What do you think of the adaptations I talked about above? What are some of your favorite not-mentioned-above adaptations? What books would you like to be adapted into (well done) films/TV shows?

Adios my dears! ❤

Oh my gosh, I think this post was great!! No need to worry about weirdness!! 🙂

I totally agree with Harry Potter, LOTR (but not The Hobbit…more later), City of Bones, and The Hunger Games. (The crying part I’m ready for. I embarassed the heck out of the poor kid sitting next to me at the Goblet of Fire premiere.)

Percy Jackson – never read. My son has seen the films and read book 1. His view – okay on both counts.

I like the book Hobbit better, but the movies are good, and they did a great job of tying everything in to LOTR. I could re-watch those a million more times!!!

I LOVED the book City of Bones. (Unfortunately the series got progressively worse for me.) I CAN’T STAND the tv series Shadowhunters. (Sorry, folks. Really hope no fans get upset.) But I think the cast is *bad* for the tv show. The movie – the casting was excellent. I didn’t mind the storyline being different one bit. I enjoyed it, too.

An interesting one to ask for opinions on might be The Maze Runner – now that they’ve made those movies. I know those books had a BIG following, so that could be a good query.

    Happy viewing! 🙂

Haha thank you so much! ;P And isn’t that always the way with adaptations?! You’re already so attached to the characters that when you see the movie… You break down! Haha I’ve freaked out many people.
(You should totally read Percy Jackson!!)
Haha I’ve only seen the first two episodes of Shadowhunters and wasn’t impressed… But I’m such a huge fan of the books that I plan on watching them anyways. XD
Oh wow that’s a great idea!! I may have to make a part two of this post and if I do I will most certainly include The Maze Runner in it!

I was having a discussion on another post about The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – which started out as a book around 1980, I believe, and then became a radio show, and then a TV miniseries, all of which were sort of their own thing, but it also all seemed to fit together. (If that makes sense.) Anyway, about 20 years later, a Hollywood film version was made, and a lot of fans had a lot of problems with it. There are things I like about the movie, and I don’t feel it’s terrible at all; but I can also certainly understand their feelings. It’s interesting to note that people who saw the movie without ever having read the book (in this instance) tend to like the movie and think the book is kind of boring and disjointed. But the author had passed away before the film was finished, so there were lots of things the film-makers didn’t consult him about.

This is a bit of a digression, but I think it proves a point on how very different the adaptations can be, and the opinions of them!

Don’t get me started on Shadowhunters. Literally. I have to get my kid off to school and take a shower and get the baby ready… 🙂

I will say that to me it’s a big disappointment. The writing is lame, the acting subpar, the changes they made not necessary and make the show seem even further from the books. Also the casting was off in a lot of ways. I thought the casting for the movie was a lot better.

        Agreed! Very good points.
And haha! I have to say I agree…. And I’m so disappointed! This book series has gotten TWO SHOTS at an adaptation, and has pretty much blown it. Here’s to hoping that they get their act together real fast! XD

I think the key to the book to movie adaption arguments (from either side) are that they are always adaptions. It’s not supposed to be the book exactly as written, and most of the times, that’s not even possible for budgetary or logistic reasons. People get so worked up about it, and you already know that movies are going to differ. I always try to evaluate each on their own, not comparing a movie to a book, but just going by whether I liked the movie or not.

I think my favourite adaption, aside from Harry Potter, is If I Stay. It was a fantastic movie, and a great book.

Bless! You put the thing into words haha!

I will for sure have to check out If I Stay! My stepsister adores that book, and has been trying to get me to pick it up for quite some time. At some point this summer I’ll have to read the movie/watch the book back to back!

Great post! I know some people are super picky when it comes to book to movie adaptations, but I’m not. The movie just can’t always be 100% like the book!

My favorite book to movie adaptation, and quite possibly my favorite movie of all time is Matilda. I did watch the movie first, so that could add to my decision though lol. But honestly, yes there are quite a few differences between the two, but then there are some things that are so similar it is like word for word perfect. The two really compliment each other quite well, I think! Yet I can still enjoy and appreciate their differences.

The Giver was another adaptation that I really enjoyed! There were definitely a lot of changes, but honestly I wasn’t that bothered by them.

Basically, I don’t mind movie adaptation changes, as long as the heart of the book is still there. The only movie adaptation that I’ve seen so far, that I really just did not enjoy was The Scorch Trials. The movie was basically entirely unrecognizable, and in my opinion, lost the core of what the book, and even the series, was about.

Thanks so much Theresa! Same here actually!

I’ve not read Matilda yet, but I’ve watched the movie multiple times and I love it!

And I agree on the Giver as well. I did love the book more, but I thought, as adaptations go, that the movie was really good! Very well done.

I totally agree! I actually really enjoyed The Scorch Trials! Granted, I haven’t read those books in years, but I am actually enjoying the movies a lot more than I did the books… Which never really happens to me!

I think I could have enjoyed The Scorch Trials if I had gone into it knowing it was going to be completely different, because it was very action-packed and entertaining. It was a good movie, just a terrible adaptation. Plus, I think it threw me for a loop, because The Maze Runner movie was very faithful to the book, so I expected that the rest of the series would be just as faithful. I’m glad you are enjoying the movies though! ☺️

Totally agree about the LOTR movies!! I’ve heard that Tolkien’s family hates the films for leaving out too much (plus they didn’t want them to happen in the first place), but being the ultimate Tolkien fan that I am, I think Jackson did a great job of including the important bits & editing some things to help it not overwhelm viewers. And the HP movies are perfection. In fact, you inspired me; going to binge watch them now. Loved your post!!

Oh wow, really?! I had no idea!
But definitely agreed on that! While they did leave out a lot, (they kinda had to! I mean those books are pretty dense!) they were brilliantly done, especially for people who haven’t read the books before.
Ah, yay! Glad I’ve inspired you to do some Potter Watching! ;P Thanks so much, and glad you enjoyed!

The Hunger Games movies are probably my favorite book-to-movie adaptations. Everything was done so well and the casting was fantastic. I also feel like the movies got better and better as they went on which is usually the opposite of what happens haha

I don’t dread it when books are made into movies. But I think The Hunger Games was really good, but I didn’t like the books.
But The Maze Runner movies are horrible. I’m so glad the last one won’t be made. I have read three books of the series.
I never read the Harry Potter books, but I have seen the movies. I have seen The Lord of the Rings movies, but I have seen Hobbit yet. I never read the books.
I haven’t seen Percy Jackson yet. I haven’t read the book.
I did like City of Bones. I haven’t read the book series yet.

Oh wow, really? I have the somewhat unpopular opinion of liking the movies more than the books haha.
Oh my gosh you for sure have to read those series’! All of them are some of my all time favorites!

Haha great post, I love your rating systems 😉

I think that book to movie adaptations can never live up to the ideas and scenes we have played out in our minds. Everyone thinks and imagines in different ways, so to funnel that in to ONE spectrum is very difficult. And with all movies and books it’s hard to please everyone. Harry Potter series was great as movies though! I thought they did a great job with that one.

I also adore HP movies! They leave out a lot of things (PEEVES WHERE R U) but the plot stay loyal to the books! And the effect really makes me want to be a wizard even more. Also the cast is perfect for me. It’s basically a flawless series for me. I also really enjoy City of Bones and The Lightning Thief. And while Sea of Monsters was meh for me, seeing Logan Lerman’s face for 1+ hours is not a bad thing right 😉 LoTR and The Hobbit give me FEELS. Everytime I heard the Hobbit song I just want to cry randomly. And lastly, THG. I don’t really enjoy THG at the beginning, but overall it’s a really great adaptations! This is is such a great post Leah!
